Armin: “I’m not going to make Avicii-like records just because I can”

Dutch kingpin Armin van Buuren has been doing his usual thing: working very hard. In between planning for a new album, the DJ has spearheaded the A State Of Trance 550 world tour, visiting Kiev, Miami, L.A., Moscow, London and Den Bosch. As well as presenting the ASOT550 stage at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival, Armin also closed the mainstage – and the festival – on Sunday with a galvanising set that put trance squarely in the spotlight. There’s been no slowing down since then either, and in the latest edition of Canada’s DJ Mag, the Dutchman gives an honest appraisal of large-scale dance music at the moment. The interviewer asks whether “we are seeing a bigger drive towards the big room synths, like Avicii for example”. “I think it’s a temporary thing to be honest,” Armin replies. “I mean,...

The youth nowadays has a vast apparatus in terms of both hardware and software that practically allow almost anyone to be a “DJ”, what the old could consider just Music Players, with no more need of accurate ears, agile fingers, previous knowledge of the tracks, with very well created tracks via software, with beats...

Ellrich & Plaice – Fucking Society

This song always keeps me in check. It’s all about how people “sell out their soul, in search for publicity”, which is evident in so many fields. It’s not hard to sell out your soul either, many people cannot handle the temptation of fame, money and power. This song reminds us of the importance of sticking to our values, instead of selling them out… stay true to yourself people… and demand proper...

Trance; Then and Now

Posted by on Dec 31, 2011 in Featured, News, Opinions | 11 comments

Once upon a time, the trance scene was thriving; when each week city centres across Europe would be full to the brim with ravers wanting to dance into the early hours. Of course it wasn’t all high BPM, a lot of the music wasn’t made just for clubs, but it still had that distinctive trance sound. Music back then, when all felt right with the world, was made with hardware and over a longer period of time, with effort having to be put into the music made as back then you couldn’t simply start your own label and sell your tracks via Beatport, TrackItDown,...
